How do you use a dough hook, like for a kitchen aid mixer? Can you knead the dough with it?

I don't know what it is for, that is why I asked. Thanks everyone, I decided to use the hook for the whole thing, hope it works!! I'm just making calzones so if I mess it up and it dosen't rise all that much dinner won't be ruined.

  1. Isn't that what it's for?
  2. You can use it to mix your dough but you still have to knead the dough by hand. Let it rise and knead again. But hey the kneading is the fun part...it is where I take out my day's stress hee hee
  3. It was created to knead the dough, just go by your recipe and then knead the dough with the hook until it gets the consistency you want. You may want to hand knead it when it's closer to the desired consistency. Do you know how to install the hook to the machine right?
  4. Yes you can - i have an English mixer with a dough hook and it makes great bread and buns. put flower into the bowl add liquids and activated yeast turn mixer on to medium to mix all together and add sufficient water or flower so the mixture cleans the sides of the bowl Leave to rise then kneed the dough in the mixer remove shape into rolls or a loaf tin etc. let rise in a warm humid place then bake
  5. The dough hook is used for the initial blending of wet ingredients to dry ingredients. While you can do this by hand, professional grade equipment come with these kind of attachements to free the chef to do other things. Once blended, you can have fun kneading the dough.
  6. Once you add all the dry ingredients to the mixing bowl, you slowly add the liquid (water, milk, etc) while the dough hook is running. The hook will "knead" the dough. You need to be careful to let the dough rest, though, because the hook heats the dough up quickly. Happy Baking!!!!
